Frequently Asked Questions
You likely have questions about your surgery. To help you feel prepared, we’ve outlined common questions about what you can expect before, during, and after your procedure. If you don’t see your question answered, our clinical staff is happy to help.
Preparing for Surgery
How will Southpoint Surgery Center communicate with me before my surgery?
We will contact you several times by phone or secure text messages to help you prepare for your surgery. To ensure you don’t miss any important updates, please save our number: 904-854-4854.
What do I need to provide before surgery?
You’ll need to submit clearance from your physician and any special testing required for clearance (i.e., EKG if applicable) to Southpoint Surgery Center by the due date provided by your surgical coordinator.
When will I receive my pre-op instructions?
You’ll receive your pre- and post-op instructions via call or text a few days before your surgery. Please review, sign, and submit them as soon as possible by following the secure link and instructions.
How will I know what time to arrive for my surgery?
You’ll receive your arrival time and a request to confirm 1-2 days before your surgery. If you do not have your arrival time by the morning before surgery (Friday for Monday surgeries), please call the surgery center at 904-854-4854 that morning. If the time you are given needs to be adjusted, please contact your surgeon’s office. They can assist you in finding a different time (if possible) or reschedule you to another day.
Do I need someone with me on the day of surgery?
Yes. A responsible adult (“caregiver”) must accompany you to the surgery center and remain on-site for the duration of your visit. This can include hiring a caregiver or arranging transportation, but you cannot ride home alone using a taxi or ride-share service. For your safety, we advise that you take care and refrain from driving for at least 24 hours after surgery. Your surgeon’s office will provide details on driving, work, and other restrictions.
Can I eat or drink before my surgery?
No. You may not eat or drink after midnight the night before surgery. This is for your safety. No exceptions will be made. You’ll receive personalized instructions regarding your medications.
The Day of Your Surgery
What should I bring with me on surgery day?
After you arrive and sign in, a front desk specialist will meet with you. Please bring:
- Your valid, government-issued photo ID
- Insurance card(s) (if applicable)
- Any pertinent or requested documents/forms
- Payment for any outstanding balance
- A responsible adult (“caregiver”) to accompany you
Once registration is complete, you’ll return to the waiting room, and a pre-op nurse will come for you as soon as possible.
What can I expect in the pre-op area?
In pre-op, your nurse will gather information and initiate IVs and other necessary preparations. You’ll meet with the anesthesiologist and the surgeon. The pre-op process can take an hour or longer. When cleared and ready for surgery, a member of the surgical team will transport you to the operating room or procedure room. You’ll meet the staff who will be with you throughout the procedure(s), and they will continue to prep you for surgery.
What can I expect in the recovery area, and when can I go home?
You’ll be taken to post-op/PACU, where the team will prepare you for discharge home. Most patients are in recovery for less than 30 minutes, but it can range from 10 minutes to 1.5 hours, depending on the type of surgery.
May I drive home after surgery?
No. For your safety, you must refrain from driving for at least 24 hours after surgery. When you’re ready for discharge, a team member will call or text your ride to come to the side of the building to pick you up under the covered drive-thru. You’ll be taken to the car in a wheelchair, and we’ll assist you in a safe transfer into the vehicle.
Recovering from Surgery
What should I expect during recovery?
You’ll receive a text (or call) from the surgery center to check on you the day after surgery. Please follow the instructions in the text. Be sure to follow all post-operative care instructions provided to you by the surgery center and your surgeon’s office.
Should I continue my medications?
Resume all medications as instructed by your physicians and your surgeon. If you have any questions regarding post-operative instructions, appointments or medications, please contact your surgeon’s office.
Will I have a follow-up visit?
Yes. You must attend all post-op appointments with your surgeon’s office. If an appointment is not already scheduled, please contact your surgeon’s office to arrange one.
